Sussex Best Bitter ABV 4.0%
A superbly balanced session bitter with a prominent hop character. Our most famous and popular brand - it makes up over 90% of our total brewing capacity. Winner of the Champion Best Bitter of Britain title at CAMRA's Great British Beers Festival in 2005 and 2006. First brewed as recently as 1955.

Sussex Old Ale (aka XXXX) ABV 4.3%
A Victorian style dark winter brew produced from higher proportions of crystal malt. XXXX is extremely popular and eagerly anticipated in October when it returns from summer recess. It was Harveys first beer to win a National Award in 1952 and has won many other accolades since.

Armada Ale ABV 4.5%
A dry, heavily hopped strong pale ale with an extremely light colour. Originally commissioned by the National Maritime Museum for the quarter centenary celebrations of the defeat of the Spanish Armada by Sir Francis Drake, we were requested to continue production by numerous devotees.

Hadlow Bitter ABV 3.5%
This hoppy pale ale is a recent evolution from the successful bitters of the last century and is an ideal lunchtime pint. The Kent village of Hadlow, in the fertile Medway valley, is in one of England's last hop growing areas and has a great brewing tradition. When Harveys acquired a pub in Hadlow the brew to celebrate this event used only these local hops and the beer has been produced by popular demand ever since.

Sussex Mild ABV 3.0%
A dark malty mild. Ideal sustenance when there is physical work to be done. Harveys awards for milds date back over half a century and this style of beer enjoys a long heritage at the brewery.

Olympia ABV 4.2%
A cool golden summer ale. Very refreshing with a balanced complexity. The latest in our main range of beers it was first produced in 2005 to celebrate our major summer award at Kensington Olympia for Best Bitter. It became an instant hit and is especially appreciated when served at 11 degrees Celsius.

Seasonal Beers & Ales at The John Harvey Tavern

	Blue Label ABV 3.6% This premium pale ale is brewed to an original gravity of 1036° - 1040° and dry hopped during the period of maturation prior to bottling. The result is a full bodied pale ale which should impart a delicate hop character behind the residual sweetness of the malt sugars.
	India Pale Ale ABV 3.2% India Pale Ale (IPA) is brewed to a lower original gravity and this beer undergoes a similar process of maturation to the Blue Label. The result is a lighter, more mellow ale with a distinctive hop character.
	Armada Ale ABV 4.5% A dry, heavily hopped strong pale ale with an extremely light colour. 	Harveys Kiss ABV 4.5% Kiss was first brewed in 1999 to celebrate the return of Rodin's famous sculpture to Lewes (from where it was commissioned) for a summer-long exhibition. It is the only beer which Harveys produce using oats in the mash, creating a unique mealy character. This is a seasonal ale bottled in February.
	Copperwheat Beer ABV 4.8% The copperwheat brew is made from malted barley and wheat together with Hallertau hops. Brewed in a style of a continental 'Weiss Bier' it is best served chilled. This is a summer beer brewed in June.
	Tom Paine Ale ABV 5.5% Brewed to commemorate the bicentenary of the publication of the "The Rights of Man" by the radical Thomas Paine who lived in Lewes and worked as an excise officer in the town between 1768 -74. Thomas Paine is believed to have helped draft the American Declaration Of Independence. A dry hopped strong pale ale.
	South Down Harvest ABV 5.0% This is one of our very popular seasonal ales and is brewed from new hops to celebrate the Harvest Festival. It is available for a limited period each year and is bottled in September.
	Bonfire Boy ABV 5.8% Harveys first brewed and bottled Bonfire Boy as a tribute to the emergency services following the fire in July 1996 which destroyed the brewery shop and offices. Bonfire Boy on draught is now established as part of our seasonal brews and is available every November. A strong ale, brewed to an original gravity of 1066°. The brew has a subtle smoky character.
	Old Ale ABV 3.6% A premium bottled beer, originally brewed as No.1 Brown Ale but renamed due to the number of awards it has gained at successive International Brewers' Exhibitions since 1952. Brewed to an original gravity of 1040° - 1044° this dark, full bodied beer combines sweetness and strength to produce an exceptionally smooth palate
	Nut Brown Ale ABV 3.0% Historically so called due to the flavour of the beer, whose roasted malt and caramel sugars produce the nutty palate of this dark, smooth ale. Priming sugars are later added to impart a background sweetness.
	Harveys Porter ABV 4.8% We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey's brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form.
	Sweet Sussex ABV 2.8% A lush, sweet stout named after the county in which it is brewed. Low in alcohol, Sweet Sussex was a prize winning beer at the International Brewers Exhibition in 1968 and was awarded the Silver Medal at the Brewing Industry International Awards in 1990.
	Elizabethan Ale ABV 8.1% Originally brewed to mark the Queen's Coronation in 1953, this prize winning golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. Regular drinkers simply asked for a 'Lizzie'.
	Christmas Ale ABV 8.1% This brew's popularity made it difficult to restrict its availability to the Festive Season. Fortunately the high alcohol level enables us to brew enough to last most of the year so enthusiasts can be kept happy all year round. It is heavily hopped, dark and strong.
	Imperial Russian Stout 2000 ABV 9.0% Regarded as one of the world's most unusual and prestigious beers, the recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve and develop complexity up to one year and has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer.
	Star of Eastbourne ABV 6.5% A strong, old style India Pale Ale reminiscent of the ales exported across the globe by British breweries during the early 19th Century. It has a full hop aroma, golden body and tight head. The bitterness lingers on the palate giving a dry finish.
	Lewes Castle ABV 4.8% Best Standard Dark Ale in the 2008 World Beer Awards. A traditional full malty 'Brown Ale' with a creamy head. Mild hop notes with a lingering biscuity sweet palate give coffee and liquorice notes. A bitter sweet finish.
	John Hop ABV 1.0% A low-alcohol Sussex Pale Ale produced from the Best Bitter. The name is derived from the cockney rhyming slang and is a fitting tribute to the generations of Londoners who harvested the crop in the hop gardens of Sussex.
	Bill Brewer ABV 1.0% A low-alcohol Sussex Old Ale produced from the Old Ale and retaining the essential character of this brew. As with the John Hop, the beer is produced identically to the parent product and the alcohol is only removed prior to bottling. A Bronze Medal Winner at the BBI Awards in 1990.
